According to Gartner, Samsung is now the main supplier of Android smartphones, taking Motorola’s number one spot.
Samsung managed to sell 32.1% of all the Android smartphones sold in the United States in Q3 2010, a significant increase from 9.2% of the smartphone market back in Q4 of 2009.
Samsung’s huge success is mainly attributed to its Galaxy S line up of premium smartphones, which recently passed the three million shipment milestone in the US. The Galaxy S collection is widely distributed among all major US carriers including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, U.S. Cellular and Cellular South.
The Samsung Galaxy S line up is based on a 4-inch Super AMOLED display screen, 1GHz Hummingbird application processor running Google Android 2.1 (but should be updated very soon to Android 2.2 – Froyo operating system).
With Samsung on top of the Android smartphone sellers, Motorola took the second spot, HTC and LG took the third and fourth spot respectively. It seems that Motorola is still rather in a precarious position since its main line up is distributed mainly through Verizon Wireless. Verizon which should also distribute the Apple Iphone in the very near future, giving more choice to consumers creating a dent in Motorola’s line-up.
