There will be no more Flash for Android devices starting from Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Adobe stated in a blog post that Flash will not be supported anymore on mobile devices such as the new Nexus 7 from Google. Even third party browsers will not have Flash support.
This comes to no surprise as one of the main reason from Adobe to leave Flash behind is due to Apple’s decision last year to not support Adobe Flash player on iOS.
Turns out to be the end of Flash for mobile devices until August 15 date when Adobe will remove Flash from the Google Play Store. Until then, you can always update your Android device with Flash, but as soon as you’ll get the update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, prepare yourself to say goodbye to Flash. According to Adobe, it could still work, but there could be some unpredictable behavior and there will be no more support for it, in other words, you’re on your own.
What’s the future of Flash? Adobe is pushing HTML5 and packaging Flash in native apps with Adobe AIR.
But the real question is, how many current devices will be affected by this? Not many as for now most devices don’t even have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich yet. Besides, it seems like the requirements for Jelly Bean is a quad-core processor which very few devices have now. But in the future, Flash will definitely be missed.
