Movie streaming and downloads blocked on rooted Android devices

To root or not to root? This is the question a lot of Android owners ask themselves when acquiring their Android device.

Well if this can help you in your decision, Google is blocking Movie rentals on the Android Market for rooted devices.
That’s right, despite the fact that Google announced during the I/O conference a movie streaming service, well some restrictions may apply.

MovieStream

Smartphones or tablets devices trying to access the Android Market for movie rentals will get an error 49 or “Failed to fetch license.” The reason for this is due to copyright restrictions.

Movie rentals is supposed to launch with Android 3.1 Honeycomb tablets and a new Android Gingerbread. Rooted device can easily circumvent copy protection, hence the stringent restrictions on movie rentals.

In a way, this is understandable, but on the other hand, users who wanted a stock device with no carrier or manufacturer bloatware will have to think twice before rooting. The main rooting reason is to have a clean Android device that you can then setup to your liking.

Until someone finds a hack, users will just have to make a choice, to root or not to root. Hopefully Google will take another step back and realize that users with a rooted device are not necessarily pirates, there’s some good people too… really.
