Lakshmi Access Communications is preparing to launch a series of very affordable Android tablet in India. The tablets will be running on Android and will be available in 7, 8 and 10-inch model. They will be known as Pepper, Tamarind, Mirchi and Paprika Android tablets.
For now, a few details about the Pepper specs have been released. This tablet will be the most affordable Android tablet in India, with a price of only Rs 6,250 (USD $99). The Lakshmi Pepper Android tablet will be powered by an 800 Mhz processor with 256 MB RAM and 4 GB of ROM expandable up to 16 GB.
The Pepper tablet will be running on Android 2.2 Froyo and additional hardware will be available as an option such as external keyboard.
With this newcomer, the Android tablet world is really getting shaken in India. First with the launch of the Reliance Communication tablet last week, available for 12,999 rupees, then by earlier this week by India’s Beetel Teletech with the Beetel Magiq tablet for only 9,999 rupees.
But why are companies releasing so many Android tablet in India? According to industry experts, many Indians are planning to buy a computer. But most of them should end-up buying a tablet. So if manufacturer can sell their low priced tablets to a portion of these emerging users, that would represent a huge market. Remember, after China, India has the most population.
That’s a lot of money at stakes, no wonder everyone wants a share of it.
