A beta version of the Android player for Blackberry has made a quick appearance on the Blackberry website.
The player is supposed to enable ported Android applications to run on Blackberry’s PlayBook tablet. Android developers must port their apps in order to make it available to the Blackberry world.
For those who have installed the beta version of this Android player, it seems like there is a common agreement that the player runs very slow. The lack of basic features and the poor build of this player lead us to the conclusion that this is probably an old build of the player. Regardless, the player has been removed from the Blackberry website, so we might as well wait for the official one.
The introduction of an Android player for Blackberry’s Playbook will bring momentum to the Playbook as it is currently lacking apps. With the Android player, Blackberry’s Playbook will see its apps catalog increase quite a bit thanks to Android. Note that one limiting factor is the portability step Android developers must follow in order to make their apps available for Blackberry.
The Playbook is RIM’s response to Apple’s iPad and Android tablets. Unfortunately the Blackberry Playbook lack basic features such as native email. Sales are not as strong as expected and shares of the once smartphone leader has tumbled. Hopefully the Android Player will boost it a bit. Lets hope it for them.
