Skype introducing video chat to select Android devices

Skype just released an update to support video calls for Android devices. For the numerous number of Android smartphones coming with dual-cameras, video conferencing is now possible with Skype.

Video conferencing will be supported over 3G network and Wi-Fi. Users should be careful when using video chats as data usage can increase greatly with the use of video. This additional Skype feature finally levels off with Apple’s FaceTime application. But wait, there’s just a detail I forgot to mention, the Android video chat feature is available to select Android devices only.

That’s right, only the Google Nexus S, HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia neo and Sony Ericsson Xperia pro (excluding Google Nexus S 4G in the US) will have the Skype video chat support working.

I guess the Android fragmentation issues in the Android world still exists; hopefully the release of Ice Cream Sandwich this fall/ winter should resolve all this.

As for now, for the lucky ones that have a compatible handset, wish you a happy video chatting!
