Sony Ericsson has just made a very surprising move, by officially releasing a website that shows you how to unlock the bootloader for some of its Android handsets. Sony Ericsson fans can all agree that this is one of the oddest decision by Sony Ericsson to allow users to modify the bootloader; Sony Ericsson which is usually very much into proprietary format.
Sony Ericsson claims that this move is to help software developers, engineers by giving them full access to their handsets. This unlocking feature is available on the newer Xperia models such as the Xperia Play, Arc and Pro.
For the common users, this bootloader unlocking should be irrelevant as the phone already works perfectly as is. Besides, unlocking voids the warranty and there is always the risk of bricking your phone. The bootloader is the first piece of software that starts when you boot your phone or computer; it will then allow the loading of the operating system into RAM.
A final note on the matter, only unlocked phone can have their bootloader unlocked.
