Microsoft is really starting to cash in with the Android smartphone boom. Just earlier this year in April, HTC and Microsoft have settled a mutual agreement under which HTC must pay Microsoft $5 for every Android handset the Taiwanese manufacturer would sell.
This time, Microsoft is going against Samsung to pay them a smartphone license according to sources by the Maeil Business Newspaper. The license behind all this, is regarding a patent holded by Microsoft related to navigation and how Web sites display content.
Microsoft wants Samsung to pay them $15 for every Android device sold by the Korean company. Samsung is reportedly trying to lower the price to $10 by committing itself more into Windows phone. Even for $10 a phone, you can imagine how important this amount is going to be for the soon to be number one Android manufacturer.
A quick calculation, Samsung sold over 3 million Samsung Galaxy S2 devices in just under 2 months, which represents 30 millions in royalty fees. Imagine the amount of money Microsoft is making with Android; I guess they don’t really mind that Google’s Android OS is doing so well after all.
